I believe that it is extremely difficult to truly understand what a sleep deprived parent is going through unless you have experienced it yourself. And I have been in that very situation. When my husband and I became new parents, we were enamored with our little baby boy and happily faced every challenge that he brought us. Even waking up many times a night did not faze us … in the beginning. After many months though, I began to realize that this was not a healthy way for any of us to go on; we were all over tired, I was stressed and my son did not deserve this constant battle with fatigue. As he moved out of the newborn stage, his sleep began to get worse and worse. Eventually, we were waking up 12 – 16 times during the night (and plagued by 30 minute naps)! I was doing everything I could think of to get my son to sleep well; including co-sleeping, rocking, nursing all night, and many other things just to get an hour or two of uninterrupted sleep. I KNEW that these “band aids” would not solve the problem – but I just could not figure out how to help him get good sleep!
With my husband out of the state on a 2 month business trip, I bought and read (in my sleep deprived state) any book that anyone recommended; but after reading books and searching parenting websites, I was actually feeling WORSE about the problem. Not only did the books and authors have conflicting viewpoints, but they all reported many theories and explanations without ANY application or instructions for how to help. I was almost ready to force my husband to leave work and come home (which would have seriously jeopardized his job), until I found Dana Obleman and her Sleep Sense™ Method.
